IDEX Price Report: Round Diamonds Fall In January 2023

The IDEX Price Report for January 2021, published by IDEX Online, shows prices of Round diamonds falling yet again “amid continued hesitancy in the markets.” On the bright side, Fancy diamonds “fared much better.”

According to IDEX Online, “overall demand remains slow, sentiment is weak, and manufacturing in India is still well below full capacity.” And, while China scrapped its zero-COVID policy in December, infection levels are “well above anything the country has ever experienced.” In addition, “Alrosa’s goods are still reaching the market, albeit at reduced levels because of US sanctions and industry boycotts.” US inflation is declining (6.5% in December) and, according to the analysts, “there is some room for optimism, but what we’re increasingly seeing is a shift in demand from rounds to fancies, as reflected in January’s price movements.”

Among Round diamonds, prices dropped between 1%-4% in all sizes from 0.70-carats to 5.00-carats. There were some small pockets of increase, but they were few and far between. Among Fancy diamonds, price increases outweighed decreases, notably among 1.00-carats to 1.99-carats goods.
