INDIA: DIAMOND EXPORTS JUMP IN DECEMBER

Provisional data released by India’s Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) and quoted by Rough & Polished shows that in December, India’s exports of cut and polished diamonds rose 7.7% year-on-year to $1.59 billion.

 

In value terms, rough imports increased 55.6% year-on-year to $2.18 billion. In volume terms, 20.8 million carats of rough were imported – a 50% rise year-on-year. Imports of cut and polished diamonds were up 7.1% to $220.13 million.

 

From April to December, polished diamond exports were up 1.9% year-on-year to $17.2 billion. Imports of rough diamonds grew 10.9% year-on-year to $14.09 billion. In volume terms, imports rose 43.7% year-on-year to 149.03 million carats. Exports of synthetic diamonds from Surat SEZ during the same period totaled approximately $88.88 million, compared to $72.46 million during the same period in 2016.
