India: Polished Diamond Exports Plunge 47% in June

Data released by the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), quoted by Rough & Polished, shows that India’s export of cut and polished diamonds dropped 47% year-on-year to $898.32 million in June.

Imports of cut and polished diamonds totaled $194.08 million, rising 81% year-on-year. For the period April-June 2020, overall exports of cut and polished diamonds dropped 49.68% year-on-year to $1.801 billion. Overall gross imports grew 22.14% to $303.45 million. In April-June, rough diamond imports fell 82.7% to $481.65 million. Export of polished lab-grown diamonds for the same period declined 41.86% to $38.99 million.

In other-India-related news, Surat’s diamond industry has remained “at a standstill after another surge in COVID-19 cases”, according to IDEX Online. Surat’s 5,000 factories remained closed until July 19, and further decisions concerning the re-opening are pending.
