REPORT: NIRAV MODI SEEKS ASYLUM IN THE UK OVER “POLITICAL PERSECUTION”

A report in the Financial Times, quoted by Gem Konnect, claims that Indian Jeweller Nirav Modi, wanted in his country in connection with a $2 billion bank fraud that he allegedly perpetrated with his his uncle Mehul Choksi, has fled to the UK. There, he is seeking asylum on the grounds of “political persecution”.

 

In May, India filed “charges against 25 people including Modi, Choksi, former Punjab National Bank (PNB) head Usha Ananthasubramanian and two directors of the bank”. According to the report, India is waiting for the UK to approach them so they can demand Modi’s extradition.

 

Modi, along with other businessmen including his uncle Choksi, owner of Indian jewelry retail giant Gitanjali Gems, is suspected of colluding with employees of the Punjab National Bank out of nearly $2 billion.
