Inmates in Surat’s Lajpore Central Jail are being trained in cutting and polishing diamonds, courtesy of Kohinoor Diamonds. The training is part of a unique program that aims to impart a gainful skill to the inmates once they are released, Gem Konnect reports.
Kohinoor installed two polishing wheels at the jail. Eight prisoners, who have expressed an interest in acquiring diamond cutting skills, are being trained by a Kohinoor cutter as well as other prisoners who have diamond-cutting experience.
The inmates train on a diamond supplied to the trainees by the firm, and the stone “is kept in safekeeping at the jail until it has undergone the full cutting and polishing process”.
