1913 Liberty Head Nickel

THE MOST VALUABLE NICKEL IN THE WORLD UP FOR AUCTION

The Eliasberg 1913 Liberty Head Nickel, one of only five such coins to be ever produced, goes under the hammer: According to Fox News, the most valuable US nickel in existence is expected to fetch $3-$5 million at an auction in August. The seller is Dr. William Morton-Smith, an American coin collector.

The coin is set up for auction by Stack’s Bowers Galleries at the American Numismatic Association’s World’s Fair of Money at Philadelphia’s Pennsylvania Convention Center. The other four 1913 Liberty Head Nickels are held by private collectors or displayed in museums, including the Smithsonian.

The coin is named after Louis E. Eliasberg Sr., a banker and famed coin collector who bought it in 1948. Eliasberg Sr. was an American financier and numismatist from Baltimore, Maryland, and is the only person to ever to put together the only complete collection of US coins. His collection is still considered the largest US numismatic collection to date.
