BRUSSELS: TRIAL BEGINS FOR SUSPECTS OF $40 MILLION DIAMOND HEIST FROM 2013

The trial of 19 people suspected of involvement in a major heist of rough diamonds in 2013 has begun in Brussels this week, according to a report in Rough & Polished.

The slick operation occurred on February 18, 2013, when eight people drove two vans with flashing lights to the loading area of the Brussels Airport (Zaventem). They drove directly to an aircraft where Brink’s employees were loading a shipment of rough diamonds for Zurich, and stole ten kilograms of rough for a total amount of €37.5 million (approximately $40 million).

Part of the loot was discovered in Switzerland, while the rest is assumed to have been sold by the robbers and their associates. Among the 19 people brought before the court are three women. Nine of the defendants are suspected of directly committing the robbery, while the rest are suspected to have been involved in the sale of diamonds and money laundering.
