Billion-Years-Old “Space Diamond” Sold for $4.3 Million

Sotheby’s sold “The Enigma” Diamond – the world’s largest faceted black diamond – for  £3,161,000 ($4,292,322) in cryptocurrency, Rough & Polished reports.

While the name of the buyer was not disclosed, billionaire Richard Heart said he was the proud new owner of the stunning 555.55-carat diamond.

“The Enigma”, which is the largest fancy black natural color diamond in the world, is “thought to have been created from a meteoric impact or a diamond-bearing asteroid that collided with Earth,” according to an earlier report by IDEX Online  Carbonado diamonds are 2.6 to 3.8 billion years old and very rare. “The Enigma” was cut with 55 facets, “even though diamonds with a black coloration are near-impossible to cut and polish,” according to the report.
