The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will offer scholarships “worth a total of over $2 million” in 2018, according to Diamond World. Applications are accepted starting August 1 until September 30, for its 2018 Gemology and Jewelry Manufacturing Arts programs, courses and lab classes.
GIA offers on-campus and distance education (eLearning and lab classes) scholarships and for “classes at the Institute’s campuses in Bangkok, Carlsbad, Hong Kong, London, Mumbai, New York and Taiwan; and at the GIA branch in Dubai”.
According to the piece, GIA has awarded more than $8 million in scholarships to more than 1,500 students globally since 2010.
Earlier this year, the GIA partnered with nonprofit international development organisation Pact to launch a pilot study to test a new rough gem guide. The guide is illustrated and available in English and Tanzanian Swahili, and “was developed specifically to offer basic gemological and market knowledge for artisanal miners in gem-producing regions”.
