Iman and David Bowie

ONE OF DAVID BOWIE DIAMONDS: IMAN

Born in 1955, Iman Mohamed Abdulmajid, professionally known as Iman, is a Somali-American fashion model, actress and businesswoman. Iman was married to English rock musician David Bowie (Space Oddity, Ziggy Stardust and Diamond Dogs, just to name a few of his masterpieces) from 1992 until his death on January 10, 2016.

Iman’s first modeling job is a dream come true for any beginner (or veteran, for that matter) in the field: she was photographed for Vogue, and soon after landed more prestigious magazine covers, rising quickly to the status of a supermodel. She was a high fashion model for 14 years, and became a muse for many prominent designers. According to Style.com, Yves Saint-Laurent once described her as his “dream woman”.

In 2008, Iman launched Global Chic – an affordable fashion and jewelry brand created with the Home Shopping Network (HSN). According to Beauty News Sync, Global Chic includes a selection of jewelry, bags, and fashion accessories, among them a replica of Iman’s famous 15-year Anniversary Ring, given to her by David Bowie. The original is an 18-karat yellow gold plated ring with a stunning 14k white Cubic Zirconia, highly-faceted stone on top. The collection also includes the “Florentine Proposal Ring”, a piece inspired by the ring that Bowie presented to Iman when he proposed.

In the early 2000s Iman served as the face for De Beers retail venture De Beers LV. However, after a dispute over the relocation program of Bushmen tribes from the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana, Iman no longer served in the role.
