WDC REACHES CONSENSUS “ON CRITICAL AREAS” OF REFORM

The World Diamond Council (WDC), which concluded its 14th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Mumbai last week, has reached “consensus on critical areas of reform for both the Kimberley Process and the WDC System of Warranties (SoW)”, according to a press release.

According to the WDC, they passed resolutions “for further improvement of a responsible supply chain and enhanced self-regulation exercise within the WDC SoW Guidelines”, including the establishment of a strategic planning committee to help members in the implementation of the guidelines.

As for the Kimberley Process (KP), the WDC board agreed “to push forward on an expanded definition of conflict diamonds to address human security and environmental concerns”. Also, a permanent secretariat will be established, as well as a “multi-stakeholder fund which would focus on capacity building”.
